DESIGN

Good design begins with the basics: sun, soil, water, access. But food plantings shouldn’t be purely utilitarian, confined to grids of annual vegetables. When you exchange row crops for bed plantings your design choices increase exponentially.

Kitchen gardens are more than sites for growing food; they’re outdoor living spaces. A good design can include sitting areas with benches and dining tables; wood-fired ovens; pergolas; cold frames; espaliered fruit trees; and a wide mix of herbs, vegetables, flowers and fruits.
